Founded by Alvin Ailey in 1958, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is widely regarded as one of the most acclaimed dance companies in the world. Its repertory features nearly 300 works by over 100 choreographers. The company has performed in more than 70 countries across six continents and has been designated a “vital American Cultural Ambassador to the World” by a US Congressional resolution.
Today, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater performs annually at New York City Center, Lincoln Center, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), in addition to touring and performing worldwide.
While serving as Art Director at Oberlander Group and as principal of Ruth&Co, Ruth Sadinsky designed promotional materials to announce the company’s performance seasons.
The task was clear: to showcase the exquisite beauty, athleticism, and grace for which the company is renowned. Studio photographs captured dancers performing iconic moments from beloved Ailey ballets, as well as improvisational choreography, all shot against grey backgrounds. These images were colorized to enhance their depth and power, ensuring they were both stunning and impactful when displayed throughout New York City on outdoor media.
Amidst the sea of visual messages in New York City, our marketing materials for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater were purposefully designed to break through the noise and make a lasting impact. Every image and design element was carefully chosen to make an impact, ensuring that Ailey’s presence would stand out boldly and memorably. By prioritizing striking visuals and bold color, we created materials that not only announced performances but also forged a powerful connection between the company and its diverse audiences, inspiring them to experience the artistry and energy of Alvin Ailey firsthand.
