Rensselaer Magazine is the alumni publication of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a leading technological research university in Troy, New York. Ruth&Co. redesigned the magazine to spotlight the research and technology that define Rensselaer, and strengthen connections among the Institute’s 110,000 alumni to one another and to the Rensselaer campus community.
Ruth&Co. collaborated with both the Office of Community Engagement and Communications, providing expertise on outreach strategies, and the Office of Institutional Advancement, which contributed insights regarding alumni relations. Rensselaer wanted the magazine to showcase the institution’s research and cutting-edge technological initiatives through feature editorial content, and to engage the loyal alumni community by highlighting their accomplishments and encouraging participation in institute activities.
Among the features of the redesign are an updated masthead, a greater use of commissioned illustrations, photography, and infographics, a new font system, and an overall restructuring of content—all designed to maximize readability and engagement. A flexible grid allows features to encompass a wide variety of formats, from large cinematic single-image introductory spreads to in-depth articles and detailed technical content.
